Dental Crowns – When are they needed?

There may come a time and place when a dental crown is the best option for your tooth. Dental Crowns act to strengthen and re-enforce the tooth, and are therefore recommended for teeth, which have fractures, are severely broken down or are at great risk of breaking in the future. As well as being used to strengthen teeth dental crowns can also be used for aesthetic purposes such as changing the colour of discoloured teeth and redefining and reshaping the appearance of front teeth.

What are they made from?

Dental Crowns are made from porcelain, precious metals or a combination of the two and are constructed in a dental laboratory outside of the mouth. As a result the crowns can be made extremely accurately to fit your tooth and look natural within the mouth.

What does the Procedure Involve?

While it is a longer procedure than most other dental treatments it is straightforward to get a dental crown fitted for your tooth. After deciding whether a crown is the correct option for you one of the friendly dentists at Brookwater Dental Surgery will begin by preciously shaping and contouring your tooth for a crown to be placed over the top. The appointment will finish with an impression of the tooth being sent to the laboratory for fabrication of the crown. Your tooth is then covered with a temporary restoration. At the second appointment the temporary crown is simply removed and the tooth is restored with the crown to once again be functionally strong and natural looking.

There are many uses of dental crowns and if you feel you may benefit from one please do not hesitate to call up and book an appointment. One of the dentists at Brookwater Dental Surgery, Springfield will sit down with you, advise you whether a dental crown is required and go through the procedure in detail.
