Just like in sport, at Brookwater Dental, Springfield we understand the importance of teamwork, dedication, hard work, and commitment in the pursuit of victory.

We also understand the importance of safety. Every year thousands of people, including children, are treated for dental injuries that could have been avoided or minimised by wearing a protective, custom-fitted mouth guard.

Why do I need a mouth guard?

Facial injuries occur commonly in most sports. We often see patients as a result of head collisions with other players, goal posts, balls, bats and the ground. This can result in damaged, broken or knocked out teeth as well as broken jaws and cut lips. Custom-made mouth guards help by absorbing and spreading the force of impact. This greatly decreases the severity of the injury or avoids it all together.

Dental injuries can result in a lengthy recovery time, be painful and disfiguring. The cost of an injury to your teeth or jaw far exceeds the cost of a custom-fitted mouth guard. The use of mouth guards in sports where the possibility of a facial injury exists is strongly recommended.

Custom Made v Standard Mouthguard

A custom made mouth guard is much more comfortable to wear as it has a perfect fit to your teeth. This means it is much easier to wear and easier to communicate with during games. As it is custom made to not only your teeth, but your bite as well, it offers much better protection/force distribution when a head injury occurs.

How are they made?

Making a mouth guard is a relatively simple procedure for the patient. A set of impressions is taken for the upper and lower teeth. These are used to create stone models of what the teeth look like. Custom made mouth guards are fabricated on these models so they will fit perfectly in the mouth.
